Year 11 Pacific Island Leaders Of Tomorrow (PILOT)
On Thursday, 31st August, Rosa Filitonga 11FS, Teio Richard 11FI, Erollis Soseu 11WO, Thereza Su’a 11AN, Nia Su’a 11IN, Esther Taani 11PW, Debbe Tupe 11RE, August August Tusigaigoa-Vaega 11AN and myself attended the PILOT day for Year 11’s at the University of Auckland, Manukau Campus. We attended workshops where we were given key life skills on how to navigate our futures and careers as Pacific Islanders.
We were taught about the five C's of communication. CLEAR, COMPASSION, CORRECT, CONCISE, AND, COMPLETE. We played games such as blind mice that required us to use our communication skills and find out what we need to improve to move forward as people.
We were also educated by ST JOHN the importance of Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to properly perform it on those in need, who are having cardiac arrest. We each took turns practising CPR on dummies to ensure if the time came to perform it on a real person having a cardiac arrest, we would know what to do.
John-Paul Foliaki who was the lead actor in the Tongan Movie, Red, White and Brass was the guest speaker. He was very proud of where he came from. He talked to us about his life and his career. He taught us to follow our dreams and to follow our passion as Pacific Islanders.
Thank you to Mr Talamaivao for organising and taking us to attend this event.
