Festival of Lights, Diwali at Rutherford
The Festival of Lights, Diwali, brings a burst of colour, hope and joy to people across the world, not just the Indian sub-continent. At Rutherford College this year, the celebrations began early with a vibrant and varied display put up in the Information Commons, bringing forth the history and culture behind this festival, attracting the eyes of students and visitors alike.
On Friday, 10th November, members of Staff took on the invitation to dress in the distinct hues and styles of Indian costumes representing the many ethnicities of India. Saris, punjabi salwar kameez, ghagra cholis and dhotis were worn with style. The vivid garb of the staff from the Technology Department, Art Department and across the school, colors gladdened the mood. and inspired discussion among students.
A Diwali selection of traditional sweets and savouries were served at morning tea, and the staff room was abuzz with sounds of celebration. Samosas, bhajias, pakoras, bhujia, patties and murukku vied with barfi and kheer to please the palate. The occasion was enjoyed by all, with ideas buzzing for the next cultural get-together.
