The Art Department at Rutherford works hard to provide our students with opportunities to show their work, not just at school but also out ‘in the real world’, to expose them to what life as a professional artist is like. This includes entering public exhibitions such as the Trust’s annual Art Exhibition, run by Waitakere Arts (Corban Estate Art Centre).
This year was the Trust’s 36th Art Exhibition and was held in the September break at Corban Estate Art Centre (Henderson). Students who applied to participate in the youth section of the exhibition were photographers; Marlow Robinson, Keenan Aickin, Will Lopez and painters Ishani Kumar, Tyra Ibbott, Lily Carter, Henry Bell and Jemima Tichborne. All applications to exhibit were accepted. Our photographers; Keenan Aickin and Will Lopez took out the youth section in their age group. Keenan won first prize of $500 in the 16-18 years category, with his photograph ‘Bygone Speed’. The judges commented that it had a ‘cool out of focus shot’ and ‘interesting use of colour and staging.’ Will Lopez won second prize, receiving $300, in the same category with his work ‘Perspiration.’ The judges liked the ‘mysterious play of inner thoughts’, and the ‘ambiguous space and attention to detail. [It] leaves the viewer guessing.’
Congratulations to Keenan and Will, but also to all the other students who participated in their first public exhibition! The opening evening was a wonderful experience for all, bringing together students, teachers and whanau.
