Kia ora te whanau ō te Kōtuku

It was a pleasure to have the Rt Honourable Chris Hipkins come and speak to our Year 9 students on Wednesday 15 May. He talked about his journey and how we can navigate our way through life and look to be the best version of ourselves.

He linked everything back to attitude and for our young people saying yes to as many of the positive opportunities that present themselves. This will broaden the base of their pyramid. He used the analogy that the bigger the base the greater height that can be achieved with the pyramid you construct as you move through life. If you do little and therefore shy away from challenge, then future opportunities for growth and development are restricted.

I often use the following two phrases about how our young people can strive for personal excellence, you can only start from where your feet are now and winning is being better today than you were yesterday. Chris Hipkins had his own take on this due to his young children and clearly has watched the film Frozen once or twice. He has adopted the theme, that when you don’t know what to do “just do the next right thing” break it down to the next breath, the next step, the next choice, as a way to navigate your way forward when you are unsure of your direction. There is not always a roadmap for life’s challenges, so we strive to do our best in the next moment.

Finally, and because I don’t mind a sporting analogy, is that when we disagree with people and come from opposing viewpoints or perspectives, we play the ball not the person. Playing the ball is within the rules, playing the person is not. We can choose to still show respect for other people while agreeing to disagree. That’s about our attitude.
