Academic Prizegiving
It was an absolute pleasure to celebrate the success of our students at Prizegiving on Wednesday night. My thanks to all staff who made the occasion special for our students and their whanau. A special thanks to our Associate Principal Ms Donald for her excellent organization of the event.
The top academic award winners were.
Year Level | Award | Student |
Year 11 | Top Year 11 Scholar | William Wilson |
Year 12 | Top Year 12 Scholar | Jin Na |
Year 13 | Proxime Accessit | Donovan Gray and Phoebe Chin |
Dux Literarum | Nina Lyon |
For our Year 13 students, they were able to sign off on Thursday with the annual leavers' lunch. This was a last chance to gather together as a year group and create one last memory of their time together at Rutherford. At the conclusion of the lunch they were farewelled by our Year 9 and 10 students, who met them as they were leaving the hall in the top carpark with a rousing school haka.
We wish our 2024 alumni well and look forward to hearing of their future success and accomplishments. As you continue your journey post Rutherford, I encourage that you live with integrity which involves being honest with others, and most importantly with the person in the mirror. It is upon that person’s judgement that you must pass.
Live with courage -the type of courage I mean, is moral courage. It’s having the strength to do what you know to be right. Pursue excellence in all that you do. Excellence is not about perfection; excellence is a journey of doing better and remembering that we are what we repeatedly do. It is the little things done well and done often over time that make the difference.

Prefects 2025
I would like to congratulate the 24 current Year 12 students who were named as prefects for the 2025 academic year. The quality of applicants was particularly high this year and there were a number of students who were unlucky to miss out.
The standard of interviews for head students across the candidates shortlisted was also of a very high calibre. Our prefects for 2025 are:
Title | Students |
---|---|
Head Students | Samara Hohaia and Tanner Costin |
Deputy Head Students | Michaela Bain, Natalia Noone-Jones, Isaac Lee Sang and AJ Muliaga |
Prefects | Dylan Chapman, William Chen, Lisa Chieu, Khamial Gerrard, Iris Hill, Om Hinge, Lui Joe, Praveena MS, Zach Petley, Jacob Petley, Jayna Pragji, Felix Rasmussen, Ailidh Stewart, Beth Taye, Yashvi Trivedi, Sophie Wallace, Kiera White, James Wong |
For our Year 9 and 10 students there is plenty of work still to do as they prepare for their end of year exams (22 and 25 November). The more they choose to take these opportunities seriously the better prepared and more confident they will be as these exams and assessments become higher stake as they progress through into Years 11-13. Time spent preparing and revising and learning how to do this and what works and what doesn’t work is money in the bank for the challenges ahead.
Board Community Consultation
The board some input from students, staff and whanau to help them decide on strategic planning priorities for 2025. Please take a few minutes to complete their survey. You can access it on the school website. We appreciate you providing your opinions about what you believe is working well and/or what could be the focus for next year. The survey will remain open until November 18.
Study Leave
All students in Y11-13 are now on study leave unless required to attend for workshops or other requirements. Don't forget the NCEA Exam timetable and study tips is available on the Rutherford College Study Site. NCEA starts 5 November.
Bingo Night
The school would like to acknowledge the contribution the following firms have made toward some great auction items for the bingo night. Bingo night is 2 November and all funds raised will go toward the Football South American Trip.
